Get Free MRT Rides in Malaysia

The 1st phase of Malaysia's mass rapid transit (MRT) opened 2 days ago on Friday, 16 December 2016. The public was invited to come test out the MRT with free rides for a month (until 16 January 2017).

It will only be for the 1st phase though. The 1st phase spans from Sungai Buloh to Semantan. The remaining stretch (Phase 2) is scheduled to be open to public in July 2017, spanning from Semantan to Kajang.

The stations' interiors are clean and spacious, with some companies already grabbing a chance to set up booths to promote their products to passerby.

At the stations, huge boards showing the entire public transportation network are displayed prominently to visitors.

Still free, so the ticket machines are temporarily disabled...

At the train floor, huge glass panels form the walls, enabling you to see far into the distance.

Clear electronic signboards mark the time when the next train arrives.

The train has arrived!

First thing about the train once you step in is how cold the air is. The air conditioning is working really well!

Some stations have been prepared with huge parking lots. Definitely a huge plus for Malaysians to use the MRT.

Some of the stations have feeder buses to take you to popular nearby destinations. At the Semantan station, for example, feeder buses take you to 1-Utama.

It's packed inside the feeder bus

Did you know?

The summons for displaying an invalid ticket (i.e. has already passed its duration) is RM30. Compare this to the summons for NOT displaying any ticket (you get fined RM100). Wow.

What can we learn from this?
Yep, it's better to display an old ticket than no ticket.

How to check for existing MBPJ summons:

1. Go to http://eps.mbpj.gov.my/splk/search.asp
2. From the dropdown Jenis Carian, select No Kenderaan (i.e. vehicle registration number)
3. Then under Maklumat Carian,  enter your vehicle registration number, without a space e.g. abc1234
4. Hit the "Cari" button to search the records
5. When the results are displayed, click on the entry under the "No. Kompaun" heading for details. You may print a copy of the compound by clicking the "Cetak Salinan Kompaun" button, or find a new compound with "Cari Semula".
6. Write down this Summons Number for later use.

How to pay for MBPJ summons online:

1. Go to http://eps.mbpj.gov.my/loginPengguna3.aspx
2. If this is the first time paying online, you'll need to register yourself. Click the link in "Sila klik disini untuk mendaftar jika anda belum mendaftar."
3. If you've forgotten your password, click the link in "Jika anda lupa kata laluan anda, sila klik disini".
4. When you first register yourself, these are the required details:

  • Name
  • User ID (NRIC, Passport number)
  • Password
  • Email address
5. After logging in, from the dropdown box Kemudahan, select Kompaun Trafik & Pelbagai
6. Under "No Kompaun", fill in the Summons Number you wrote earlier.
7. Hit the "Cari" button.
8. In the results shown, tick the entry for the compound you wish to pay (tick box is next to the "Amaun" heading), then click "Tambah Di Senarai" (add to list)
9. Finally, tick the entry in the list which you wish to pay, then click the "Bayar" (pay) button.

Note: By paying online, I noted that my summons payable was reduced:

  • RM30 summons appeared as RM15.

  • RM100 summons appeared as RM30

I was pleasantly surprised and happy with the discount.

10. Click "Kad Kredit" to complete payment with credit card.
11. After payment is successful, you can view your past transactions paid under "Rekod Transaksi" in the main dashboard, and print a copy of the payment slip.

Disclaimer: Although the summonses above were discounted when I paid online, I have learned that the amount discounted may vary for different users. The main lesson to take away is: Pay online to get a discount, but expect some differences in the discount given.

Update: Given that different users are reporting receiving different discounts, there seems to be some confusion about what discount to expect. How much discount did you receive? What was the situation surrounding your fine? Please let me know in the comments section, i'm very interested to hear from you!

Why Can't My Proton Saga BLM Start?

You own a Proton Saga BLM and one day when you turn the ignition key, the car doesn't start as usual. Instead, the engine coughs and the battery and alternator light comes on. But you've only recently changed the car battery. What could possibly be stopping your car from coming to life?

There may be many reasons why your Proton Saga BLM doesn't start when you turn the ignition key, but here is one solution which worked for me.

Disclaimer: My Proton Saga BLM is an automatic transmission, 1.3 liter model and registered in 2010.

The key unit of the Proton Saga BLM is made of plastic housing, and it houses many important electrical components inside. Many years of constant use (i.e. gripping the plastic housing and turning the key to start the engine) result in the plastic housing cracking and giving way. One of the effects of wear and tear is a hole forming in the plastic housing, near the metal part of the key.

Everything looks normal from the top

On closer inspection, the plastic housing has a huge crack, exposing the insides

Next to this hole lies a sensor which is crucial to starting the car. The sensor is rectangular and measures approximately 1cm by 0.5cm. Through wear and tear, if the hole becomes big enough, or if the plastic housing becomes wobbly or nonfitting, chances are the sensor may fall out of the plastic housing. This results in the car being unable to start even if you insert the ignition key and turn it to start the engine.

Plastic housing opened, showing position of sensor within it

Plastic housing opened, with sensor removed

Conclusion.
If you observe your key's plastic housing has become loose or cracked, chances are the sensor has fallen out. Open the plastic casing to confirm that the sensor has fallen out. Try to recall where you last applied pressure to the plastic housing. Usually it would be the last time you started or stopped the car... in which case, check your driver-side car mat. Replace the sensor, and tape the plastic housing nicely together.

How to remove empty rows in excel

1. In an empty column alongside your table, insert this formula:
=COUNTBLANK(A5:G5)

where A5 = starting column of your table
and G5 = ending column of your table

2. Select the rectangular area containing all filled cells, then
HOME > SORT & FILTER > FILTER

This will create several dropdown buttons for each column header

3. Now click on the dropdown for your COUNTBLANK column. Select only the option which reflects empty rows (e.g. "7")

4. Now you can easily highlight all the empty rows, then rightclick and select "Delete rows"

5. Finally, let the COUNTBLANK dropdown show the other filled rows. Then delete the COUNTBLANK column.

Fin.
