How to Remove Windows Not Genuine Notification Message Without Downloads

Do you have some text at the bottom right corner of your desktop, like this?

Windows 7
Build 7600
This copy of Windows is not genuine

And, while using MS Office applications (e.g. Word), do you get pop-up notifications about every 15 minutes , asking you to resolve your un-genuine Windows?

If so, you have come to the right place!

*NO DOWNLOADS REQUIRED*

To remove the pop-up notifications, follow these steps:

  1. Go to:  Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Windows > System32
  2. Look for the file called slui.exe
  3. Before you do anything, make a backup copy of this file
  4. Take ownership of the file in order to delete it:
    • Right-click on the file > Properties > Security tab > Advanced > Owner tab > Edit
    • Select your user profile (usually non-admin), then click Apply
    • Close all previous windows except the one with slui.exe
    • Right-click on the file > Properties > Security tab > Edit
    • Under "Group or usernames", select your username, then under "Permissions for users", insert ticks for all items under the Allow column, then click Apply
    • You'll receive a pop-up informing that you're changing permission settings on system folders can result in unexpected access problems and reduced security. Click Yes
    • Click OK to close the previous windows, until you come to the one with slui.exe again
    • Hit delete on slui.exe, click OK
  5. That's it. Now you won't get anymore popup notifications while working on MS Office apps.

Disclaimer:
The only downside to this method is that the pop-up notification appears when you open other Windows programs, such as Notepad, Calculator, etc. But that's minor, compared to the initial problem:)
